NSS | In Colleges and Benefits to Students
National Service Scheme (NSS) in India was started in 1969, this public service program is sponsored by the Government of India and is conducted by Department of Youth Affairs and Sports. National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary program in which young people from colleges, universities and also +2 level work towards creating a campus-community linkage.
As the symbol of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Rath Wheel from the Konark Sun Temple or The Black Pagoda which is situated in Orissa, India, it signifies the movement taking place in life through the time and space, it shows us the continuity and changes in a life. It also indicates the hard work of NSS in the field to bring social change. The wheel in the symbol portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release.
The aim behind the program of NSS is to provide help to everyone who needs it, to enhance and bring a better change in the standard of living and the way they lead their life with dignity.
National Service Scheme (NSS) is beneficial to both students as well as the society in various different means. NSS helps the student to grow individually and also as a group. It makes the students confident, develop leadership skills, and gain knowledge about different people from different walks of life. Students also learn other skills that help them lead a better life in various situations. It teaches you to be disciplined and organized with the objectives you set for yourself and your goals.
Recently the students of IPER-UG under the NSS program conducted one day camp titled as “Community Development Program” which included many activities. The main theme of this program was to bring awareness among the residents of the Keeratnagar in district Raisen for their right to vote. This awareness is important in our society as some people think that their vote will not make a difference, but on contrary it does make a difference and can bring in a greater change to the face of India.
The event included a rally taken out by the Student Volunteers of NSS unit IPER-UG. The students carried banners, slogan, placards, etc. to display their voice in favour of the right to vote given to every adult in India. After the rally, the BM IV Student Volunteers did ‘Briefing’ which focused on the rules and regulations that must be known and understood by the voter under his Voter’s right. They also gave information regarding the Right to Information about candidates and Neither of the above (NOTA) option selection on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
There was a street play or Nukkad Natak by the volunteer students of BBA & B Com department showcasing the importance of participation in voting process on the day of Elections. Another activity included a skit play by the B Com Hons IV Student Volunteers that revolved around the importance of exercising the right to vote for the literate individuals who are part of the social causes but do not participate in voting on the day of election. It also highlighted the advantages wrong candidates get on getting elected, mostly because of the non-participant citizens in election process.
Last activity in this was a Mock Drill that displayed the malpractices undertaken by some candidates to woo the voters and bring them towards their side and vote in their favour. There was actual set-up of Election Booth with facility to cast vote in the ballot box to make people understand the voting system in a much better way as visual perception is helpful in keeping things in mind. At the end of the activities, a letter addressed to the Sarpanch, Gram Panchayat, Keeratnagar was given along with a memento of IPER on behalf of the Institute.
Every individual must understand the right to vote and vote for the candidate whom they think will help in making India better and more developed than yesterday.
